Questions for Day 1

October 27, 2010

Here are a few of the Open Division’s big questions that I think we’ll start getting answers to in the morning…

  • How is Chain dealing with its roster changes? While Chain gained a ton by way of shear cutting ability when they picked up Sam C-K, Jolian, and Kiran, they lost a number of guys who were comfortable with the disc in their hands: Josh Markette is now with Ironside, and Jay Hammond, Jason Simpson, and Rob Barrett retired. While you might choose to go against one of those four rather than one of the first three in a game of 500, a lot of Chain’s success at last year’s Nationals came from how confident all of their players were with the disc.
  • Is Doublewide for real? There’s a lot of hype, and most of it stems from Brodie’s arrival. I wrote the other day that Kurt and Brodie are two of the most dominant players that I’ve seen play Ultimate, and I definitely meant it. But it’ll be interesting to see if Doublewide can live up to the expectations that accompany the 3 speed, specifically in the depth and versatility category.
  • What Sockeye will show up? Will it be the one that made the Finals at Worlds by beating Chain in a hard-fought Semifinals game, or the one that played poorly at its own Emerald City Classic and mailed it in against Revolver in the Regional Semifinals? From what I’ve heard, Tim Gehret hasn’t been around much this season, and if he’s at Nationals, he could definitely be the difference maker for an offense that has looked like it could use one more threat. Also, at Solstice last summer, I watched Revolver’s receivers run all over Sockeye while Ray Illian stayed on the O line. At Worlds, he was playing D. Has it been this way all season?
  • Injuries? We’ve not heard too much about injured players. It’ll be interesting to see if any key players are in running shoes tomorrow.

Very stoked to be here. Stay tuned…

I thought i saw Chain’s Jason Simpson getting a few points of PT vs. DW @ 2010 Regionals? (just checked the usaultimate scoreboard roster- he’s listed there as well)

That is 100% correct. My bad, I’m fixing it now.

I feel like there’s another person that was big on Chain/another top team that isn’t around this year, and I’m just forgetting them…

Joel Wooten left Chain and is with Southpaw.

Yeah… that’s not who I’m thinking of though. Maybe this is all in my head…

I guess Brian Stout from Truck Stop dislocated his shoulder, but he’s better..
    (from Truck Stop tweets)

Stout’s a pretty fierce competitor and a dedicated captain of Truck. Can’t see him not trying to play tomorrow. That said, arm being in a sling all 3rd round isn’t a good sign. I hope he makes it back for sure.

I’m working on the end of the day writeup now… kinda late, but it was good to grab some pizza/beer. Nationals is tiring.
