Odds and Ends

July 28, 2009

Wildwood was this past weekend, and it was sweet.

The playing part isn’t all that important, but I’ll get it out of the way now: we went 4-0 on Saturday, beating Random Team 1, some Mary Washington people, some Cornell people, and Random Team 2. On Sunday, we beat a team of UConn people, ending it on a sweet layout Callahan by Jesse, and then lost on double game to a team of Boston people that included Matt Rebholz, the Miller dude from the Ultivillage Club Nationals 2007 highlight who turns and pumps his fist in the air after throwing a huck but before it was completed, and some other people from DoG/Slow White/Ballometrics. I was a bit bummed to lose cause I think we were good enough to win whatever bracket we were in, but on the whole I cared a lot less about our performance this year than I did last year.

The non-playing part was the money maker. Dollar slices, the beer garden being better than last year, Jesse punking us that he pierced his ears, Greg’s big night, etc. etc. Earlier this month, I remember thinking to myself that the night before Potlatch felt like the night before Christmas did twelve years ago. The days leading up to Wildwood, on the other hand, are more like those before a sweet but unpredictable family vacation. In other words, I’d say Potlatch:Nationals::Wildwood:Vegas. All are fucking righteous.

The mock draft wrapped up over the weekend. I’m still setting my O and D teams, so I’ll wait until rosters are published to comment extensively, but I’ll say this: I had a lot to learn coming into this as far as drafting a roster was concerned, which is probably something I should have seen coming given my very marginal success in Summer Leagues, Winter Leagues, and fantasy sports. I was somewhere in between drafting for a system and drafting the best available players, and never really settled on either. That said, I’m not all that upset with how my team turned out, and I feel that we’d stack up quite well against some of the others. It will, of course, all come down to what the so-called experts have to say.

Once all of the rosters/commentary are up, I’ll probably try to continue things here, with one idea being an “if I were the manager…” perspective article on each team. One spoiler: I drafted Robert because Robert is phenomenal.

Axis has somewhat of a week off, with the track workout being optional and pod being substituted for a scrimmage against the UVA dudes and dudettes that are in town. Glazed Daze in two and a half weeks, with Chesapeake to follow. Mixed Ultimate, pillage and burn style, here we come.

Ummmm that kind of does it for now. Last week, my motivation/inspiration to post came in a 36 hour burst, so perhaps that will happen again. Until then, someone should comment because that would make my day.

I’ll comment as that would make your day. So much for musings of a less random nature, I have no idea who Jesse is, or who Greg is, and you left out pivotal details. Regardless I hope the summer is treating you well.

We were trying for colorado cup, got waitlisted, so opted for chico but chico moved their tournament dates to the weekend of ECC and our boys wanted to see ECC more than travel. We’ve played 2 round robins with UW, Predator, YCC Boys. Good showings all around by short staffs. Us over UW, Us lost to YCC twice by 4 points total, Us lost to Predator by 1 point at double game but both teams had only 8 players. We are prolly gonna hold a local round robin of Voodoo, Predator, maybe Blackfish, and us in late August. Other than that only sectionals coming up in September.
